Our Sunday family challenge

We've started having a little basketball competition after Sunday lunch. Everyone gets ten shots and the person with the highest score chooses the next family game. The children absolutely love keeping track of the results.

The whole family ended up playing

We originally bought this as a birthday present for our son, thinking he'd have a bit of fun with it in his bedroom. Instead, it's become a family competition whenever we've got a spare half hour. My daughter loves the lights, my husband is obsessed with beating everyone's scores and our son insists on keeping an official leaderboard. It took a little while to choose the right door and get everything fitted securely, but it's been a lovely way to spend time together without everyone sitting in front of separate screens.

A really fun indoor basketball set

Bought this for our eight year old because he was constantly asking to play basketball, even when the weather was dreadful. We fitted it over a suitable door, made sure there was plenty of room and let him have a go. He loves the lights and especially the automatic scoreboard. It's not exactly silent, and we've had a few balls rolling under furniture, but he's been having a great time trying to improve his score.

She's getting better at aiming

Our youngest was missing almost every shot at first. We stood a little closer, helped her practise and now she's so excited when she scores.

The perfect little distraction

My daughter likes having a few throws while waiting for dinner. It's become a funny little part of our evening routine.

The grown-ups got competitive

Bought this for the children but somehow my husband and brother-in-law ended up having a best-of-ten contest. The kids were acting as referees.

Not a full basketball court obviously

It's a miniature over-the-door hoop, which is exactly what we wanted for our little flat.

A very happy nine year old

He's started doing his own shooting challenges after school and loves checking his score afterwards.

A small downside

The scoring and light effects are fun, but all the bouncing and excitement can get rather loud. We keep it to daytime play.

The backboard gets a workout

My son is still working on his aim, so the ball hits the board quite a lot. Good thing we've got a clear area around it.

The first ten baskets

My daughter finally managed ten in one session and asked me to take a photo of the score. Very proud moment.

Nice for the winter months

When it gets dark early and the weather's miserable, having a little indoor sport activity is handy.

Better than a basic hoop

My son used to have a simple plastic basketball net. He seems much more interested in trying different shooting challenges with the electronic score counter.

The cousin competition

We had four children round and they organised themselves into teams. There were some rather questionable decisions about who actually won.

The lights and sounds

Definitely make it feel a little more like an arcade game.

A lovely gift for my nephew

He's always asking his dad to take him to the park for basketball. This gives him something fun to practise with indoors as well.

Grandma's shooting skills

My mother claimed she'd never played basketball. Then proceeded to score three shots in a row. We're all suspicious.

Just one basketball

The included ball is fine, although with two children we have to keep reminding them to take turns.

Works best with some clear space

We moved a few things out of the way so the children weren't throwing the ball near anything breakable.

Mum got a turn eventually

I spent most of the afternoon watching the kids shoot. Finally had a go myself and immediately understood why they were enjoying it so much.

Saturday morning entertainment

The kids were up ridiculously early, so my husband took them downstairs for a little basketball competition. I got an extra half hour in bed. Wonderful.

The door stayed occupied 😂

Nobody was allowed to close the playroom door because there was apparently a very important match taking place.

The mini basketball is cute

Perfect little size for the indoor setup.

It's all about the scoreboard

My daughter loves being able to challenge herself and watch her score increase.

Daughter's new favourite sport

She'd never shown much interest in basketball before but really enjoys practising with this little hoop.

Birthday boy was buzzing

My son turned seven and this was the first thing he wanted to try.

The school holiday challenge

My two boys decided to see who could reach twenty baskets first. The competition lasted much longer than I expected.

A bit of assembly

Nothing too complicated, but it's worth giving yourself a few minutes to put everything together properly.

Our family is ridiculously competitive

My husband started timing everyone and now the kids have created different challenges. Apparently normal basketball isn't complicated enough.

The Christmas morning chaos

My nephew wanted to get it set up before anyone had finished opening their presents. Very excited little boy.

Just be mindful of the noise

Lovely for an afternoon activity, but I probably wouldn't use it when the baby is having a nap.

J

Quick little games

Nice that they can have a few shots whenever they fancy rather than setting up a huge activity.
